Instant messaging

Unison Server includes an integrated XMPP-based instant message and presence server. As well as allowing IM conversations between coworkers on a Unison system, it also allows staff to talk to other networks including ICQ, Google Talk, MSN and Jabber.

The Instant Messaging server is responsible for sharing the presence and user status information as well as near-real-time message exchange between users of Unison, external XMPP-based and other messaging networks.

The Unison Desktop client communicates with the Instant Messaging server using XMPP.

The Instant Messaging server includes MSN and ICQ gateways, which are special-purpose services whose primary function is to translate XMPP into the protocols used by MSN and ICQ as well as to translate the return data back into XMPP.
